Less than a year after a group of United States investors bought the troubled Australian clothing manufacturer, Coogi is ready for its global relaunch. The company is now preparing to unveil five new lines: Coogi Luxe, Coogi Collection, Coogi Authentic, Coogi CIII and Coogi Australia. Next year?s spring collection will include even a fully reversible kangaroo coat. ED Hrady Jeans Investors Norman and Bruce Weisfeld, of Fubu, and Jimmy Khezri, of the Jimmy Jazz retail chain, who formed Coogi Partners LLC late last year, have jumped on the 1970s label revival bandwagon looking to breathe new life into the struggling 33-yearold brand. Known for its textured sweaters and colourful knits, Coogi was a multi-million dollar business in its heyday, but had run into tough times in recent years. It was placed into voluntary administration in July. Although the company will only offer men?s looks for now, managing director Bernt Ullmann promises women?s, children?s, accessories, footwear and housewares to come, and says there are companies “standing in line to sign licences”, including five for footwear alone. Ullmann names Burberry as a prime example of a brand that spurred a momentous revival out of a mono-product category. “That was a raincoat with plaid, this was a sweater with a multi-coloured stripe,” he says from Coogi?s newly opened showroom at 730 Fifth Avenue in New York. Ullmann, who spent five years at Donna Karan, convinced Milan-based designer ? and ex-Donna design director ? Victoria Grantham to create Coogi Luxe. Designed and manufactured in Italy, the line?s first collection was inspired by the upcoming Olympics and features a primary colour palette and a ringed version of the Coogi logo. Though the looks are casual ? jackets with detachable sleeves, polyurethane nylon pants and swim trunks ? the prices certainly aren?t. Jeans and bottoms start at $US300 ($A435) and sweaters Louit Vuitton Shoes will go for anywhere from $600 to $1200. The signature Coogi collection isn?t quite so pricey, and although it incorporates ideas from Grantham, it?s been created by two design teams in the US. It includes jeans, T-shirts and hooded sweatshirts, many with the new slimmed-down, modernised Coogi logo. The company has retained the brand?s original design team in Melbourne to conceive the sweaters-only Coogi Authentic line. Ullmann says the pieces strive to “give a solid nod to the heritage of the brand”, but with an updated look. Edgier materials, like leather trims, have been incorporated into the knits, which will retail for about $350. The company is famous for its multi-coloured patterns. The Coogi Australia resort collection is also still in the works. Its performance sportswear will include tennis and golf garb as well as fashion casual clothes, and is inspired by the Australian outdoors life, complete with boomerang icon. In all the lines, the wave pattern of Coogi Jeans?s signature sweaters is an important branding element, cropping up not just on knits, but in curved motifs on pants and jackets. �C Fashion Wire Daily/ Atlantic Syndication Coogi is a fashion label known for its colorful knitwear.[1]. While most famous for its textured knitwear in the 1980s, the brand was popularized in the U.S. as urban hip-hop wear.[3] In addition to clothing, the company’’s 1992 international Gucci Shoes trademark filing registered the brand for cosmetics and toiletries, leather, furniture, textiles, and toys.[4] The brand struggled after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and was purchased by a joint U.S venture, Coogi Partners LLC, in 2002.[5]
